On the heels of his recent two Grammy wins, Kendrick Lamar unleashes his new single ‘The Blacker The Berry’ and its stirring the controversy pot. I absolutely love this record, and contrary to some of the criticism that suggests that Kendrick is taking black people down the road of hatred, that’s not what I picked up from the song.
Kendrick is a lyrical genius [in my opinion], and these days I’d much rather than listen to an artist who actually thinks before they speak, and one who is unafraid to speak honestly about the realities of our society. On the track, Lamar owns his identity without remorse, and he also calls himself a hypocrite. In a culture that concentrated on the illusion of being ‘flawless’ Kendrick speaks on the ‘flaws ‘ within our society and in the black culture.
“My hair is nappy, my d–k is big, my nose is round and wide, you hate me don’t you, you hate me people, your plan is to terminate my culture, I want you know that I’m a proud monkey – raps Kendrick ”
In the last verse Kendrick raps:
Don’t Matter How Much I Say, I Like To Preach W/ The Panthers
Or Tell Georgia State, Marcus Garvey Got All The Answers
Or Try To Celebrate February Like It’s My B-Day
Or Eat Watermelon, Chicken, and Kool-Aid On Weekdays
Or Jump High Enough To Get Michael Jordan Endorsements
Or Watch BET Cause Urban Support Is Important
So Why Did I Weep, When Trayvon Martin Was In The Street
When Gang Banging Make Me Kill A Nigger Blacker Than Me – Hypocrite!
It begs the alarming questions that has yet to be answered: Why is that when a black person boasts about their culture, their race, their perceived as ‘pro-black’ and anti-white to some people. It is this false myth that perpetuates the ‘divide’ between races including the black culture. There’s this unspoken notion that suggests that black people will heal, overcome, and attain back their wealth if they simply ‘fall in line’.‘
Don’t Honor Your Ancestors Too Much, Be Mindful Of How You Brag About Your Race, Go To Work, Make Your Money, and Never Speak About Racism Or Else.’
This notion is what places the backward mentality in the minds of many hue-mans. Sadly, black people are the only race of people that are harshly criticized for it, and the the cherry on top is that many our fellow black people would rather join the bandwagon of critics than seek this truth.
” I think back to how the scholars of history inserted their conquer and divide’ teachings when discussing MLK and Malcolm X. Each of these men , shared the same goals for their people despite their practice of different religions, but they’re were on opposite sides of the spectrum on the ‘action steps’ in freeing blacks from oppression. They never tried to ‘kill’ one another, but there was a strategic emphasis placed their small divide than their joint commonalities.
In the end, both were assassinated for wanting to do something POSITIVE for their people, so who really won here. MLK who is hailed as the non-violent one received a national holiday and a monument statue [finally] in the wake of his death, and Malcolm X received a street name in Harlem, NY and the first movie biopic film courtesy of Spike Lee…. now let that sink in. – KayePlum “
No other race is criticized as much as the black race. Just because one speaks out against superiority, injustice, a prejudice incident, and or attempts to empower their race; that does not make them a racist….. PUT A SOCK IN IT ALREADY! As a people we have bigger fish to fry, and Kendrick Lamar is just one more public figure shedding light to that truth on wax.
