SELMA received four nominations at the 2014 Golden Globes Award ceremony [which kicked off last night ] in Los Angeles, California. While the movie did not take a home a ‘globe’ trophy rapper, Common, and singer John Legend won the award for ‘Best Original Song’ presented by music icon, PRINCE.
Common stole the hearts of audience members with his ‘powerful’ speech on how SELMA has changed his outlook on HUMANITY. Emphasizing on the current tensions in our country, Common reminds us that SELMA is NOW!
” The first day I stepped on the set of Selma, I began to feel like this is bigger than a movie. As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights Movement, I realized, I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white reporter, killed on the front lines of freedom.
I am the unarmed black kid, who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers, murdered in the line of duty. Selma has awakened my humanity. “
While, they may have snubbed the credits of this extraordinary film at the Golden Globes, it doesn’t take away from the talents of, director Ava Duvernay. SELMA peaked the number two slot in the box office weekend following ‘Taken 3’ which landed the #1 spot.
Looking snatched on the red carpet in a navy blue sequin dress, Ava was fine with any ‘winnings’ associated with her dream come true ‘film’, and she celebrated the night with her cast members. #SELMA.
My husband and I went to see this film this weekend, and we left with a great sense of purpose and meaning of our lives and responsibility that we owe to the generation that follows. The movie opens with a chilling scene of the events leading up to the 1963 bombing in Alabama which left four color girls dead. This is a must see film. Thank you!
