In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey ‘Where Are They Now’ show Actress, Raven Symone was questioned on her sexuality regarding her coming out tweet back in August 2013, and her response caused a social media uproar following the interview’s airing [Sunday October 5th]
” I can finally get married, yay gov’t so proud of you –tweeted Symone! ”
Oprah: Was that you way of coming out to the world?
” That was my way of saying that I was proud of the country but I will say is that I am in an AMAZING and happy relationship with my partner, a WOMAN, and on the other side my mother and my family have always taught me to keep my personal life to myself as much as possible so I try to hold the fence where I can but I’m proud to be who I am and what I am. “
Symone also stood firm in her personal beliefs and reminded the public that she does not like to be LABELED.
” I don’t need language, I don’t need a characterizing statement for it. I don’t want to be labeled GAY, I want to be labeled a HUMAN who loves HUMANS. I’m an American, NOT an African America says Symone! ”
Oprah: Oh you done set twitter on fire!
Symone: I’m sorry…I will say this I don’t know where my roots go to. I don’t how far back they go, and I can’t go on, I don’t know what country in Africa I’m from, but I do know that my roots are in Louisiana, I’m American and that’s a colorless person, and we are ALL people. I have lots of things flowing through my vains
Oprah:You’re going to get ALOT of flack for saying that, you do know that. So What Do You Mean When You Say That?
Symone: What I really mean is that I am an American. I have a darker skin color, I have a nice interesting grade of hair. I connect with caucasian, asian, black, india. I connect with each culture….
Oprah: You are a melting pot in one body
Symone: Isn’t that what America is suppose to be… I personally feel that way!
Sidebar: I can understand Simone’s stance on the the whole non-labeling but if were going to speak CANDIDLY here then we must point out that AMERICA labels her as part of particular ethnic category because of her roots origin. So while she may like to ACT colorblind the picture is pretty CLEAR for American folks.
