Chris Kelly [on left] was laid to rest this on Thursday [May 9th] in Atlanta Baptist Memorial Church. In attendance were family, friends, and industry affiliates whom were close to Chris including music producer Jermaine Dupri [who discovered, managed and produced Kris Kross 90’s track “Jump” and “Totally Krsosed Out” album], so so def artist Da Brat, and Chris Smith [the other half of Kris Kross]. Kelly was found dead in his Atlanta home on May 1st. Police reports conclude that there was “no foul play” but Kelly’s family did order a toxicology report after Kelly’s mother noted that Kelly had ingested a combination of heroin and cocaine the night prior to his death.

MTV reports:
“Smith had trouble composing himself at first, but said peace came over him on Thursday morning when he woke up. “I know I can’t fill Chris’ shoes, but I’m always gonna be here,” he told Kelly’s mother, Donna Kelly Pratte. “We had too many memories so I’m not gonna try and go through the 30 years that we kicked it.” But Smith did recall the last time the duo were on stage in February at the So So Def anniversary concert. Just seconds before they were to perform, he said, Kelly ran over to his side of the stage and said, “Stay focused. I’m like, ‘what are you doing man! The curtain’s about to come up! ”
“That’s the Chris I always knew. He was a true friend. He wanted to see if I was alright. I just want to say I love you man. I would say Kris Kross forever, but without Chris, it ain’t never gonna be the same. But I hope our legacy for hip-hop is never forgotten.”
Close sources also noted that Kelly’s mother, Donna Kelly Pratte was also overwhelmed with emotion as she pleaded for the casket to remain open saying-“please don’t close the casket on my baby – not yet” .
Singer, Keke Wyatt performed a gospel song at the funeral and Latocha and Tamika Scott [formerly of Xscape] performed as well.
Da Brat and Jermaine Dupri paid their respects to Kelly by wearing their pants “backwards” as an homage to Kelly’s signature 90’s fashion style.
Kris Kross along with other so so def artists [ Jagged Edge, Members of Xscape, Bow Wow], reunited to honor Jermaine Dupri for his 20 year achievement in the music industry at the Fox Theater in Atlanta back in February of this year. Each of the artists along with special guest, Mariah Carey [who Dupri has written for] performed in Dupri’s celebration. It was a “moment to a remember” said one concert goer.
RIP Chris Kelly.
