Most people would agree that the Hip Hop music today has taken a life on its own since the days of its origin. More younger artists are entering the game and rarely do we see current artists blending music with an old school hip hop artist. However, that doesn’t mean the respect of the hip hop forefathers is not acknowledged. In a recent interview with Hartford’s Hot 93.7 radio host Jenny Boom Boom, Meek Mill and Wale talked about their admiration for hip hop legend LL Cool J [who’s returning to music -as he announced during his 2013 Grammy performance] and possibly collaborating with LL on their upcoming music projects.
Here what Wale and Meek told Jenny Boom Boom:
Wale says: No matter when you first heard his music, everyone knows LL Cool J. The actor/singer does it all. It’s a lesson younger artists like Meek and Wale have learned from his example….. The rock ‘n roll culture, they embrace their legends a little bit more than [we] do,” said Wale. “ They embrace the Rolling Stones.” …..I already got a track in my mind.” [referring to him and LL]
Meek says: “[LL] started off in the battle game, then transferred over to the rap game,….That’s where I came from, too.”
Ironically, LL Cool J is also a fan of the younger emcee’s and wants to do a collaborative song with them as well. Having sustained rap credibility of 20 year + in the entertainment industry LL says :
“ That’s a blessing, and I’m grateful,” LL said. “It’s always good to see young brothers succeeding and doing well and making their dreams come true. I’m glad to see they’re not taking it for granted. “I think we have a tendency to not embrace our legends because we see our legends as being in the way,” LL explains:
“Not understanding that the people ahead of you are icebreakers, instead of them being in your way, they’re paving the way for you.”
When asked if he would collaborate with artists, Meek Millz and Wale, LL said: “I would do that. ”
Well folks -there it is. With LL gearing up to debut a new album, it seems as though a collaboration might spawn between this trio. Can’t wait to hear that song.
