Last week, ThatPLUM caught up with rising star, Mike Check at his Stars, Dreams, & Elbow Grease album release party at Sullivan Hall in NYC. Mike Check truly needs no introduction when it comes to his musical talent – because he’s is truly gifted and lyrically talented. On His Introduction To Rap:
“I mean, it goes back to the early stages of just being at school, and seeing a group of older cats hitting up the cypher and me being like, yo what’s going on in here, watching them and then going home writing like – I can do this. But I was a shy kid so I never had the balls to hop in that cypher So, probably like a year later; I saw that cypher again, I hopped in and started flowing and that kinda where the passion grew from. “
On Upcoming Artist Influence:
” Talib Kweli, real lyrical dude. Like -I’m more lyrical than catchy. Outkast was definitely an influence, Nas, and just anyone that was just lyrical and not just spewing some sh*t, just to spew it out.”
On New Album Stars, Dreams & Elbow Grease, It’s Title, & Favorite Tracks:
” The album personifies who I am right now. The title is self explanatory. Reach for the Stars, follow your Dreams and put a little Elbow Grease and you can make it happen. Some of my favorite records – that’s hard. All of them are my favorites but if I had to choose is “When I Make It, ‘Hope’ [its about giving your passion/dream one last shot before you pack it in] “and the rest of the songs on the album. [laughs]
