The 2012 Bet Hip Hop Awards [which premiered last week in Atlanta] aired last night on the BET network. The show paid tribute to rap pioneer Rakim, and Chris Lighty [who recently passed away]. Lighty paved the way for countless artists including Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes 50 Cent, Fat Joe, Missy Elliot, [all of whom took part in a tribute finale performance]. In addition to having serious word play and catchy records, Hip Hop is about the “SWAG“, “Fashion“, and Jewelry” and many hip hop artists [former and current] took to the red carpet and stage last night in the latest trends.
Aside from the altercations that infused between 50 Cent, Gun Play, Rick Ross, and Young Jeezy, the show was truly a hip hop delight [for me at least].The cyphers was one of my favorite moments of the event and last night [although I enjoyed all of them], my favorite was the cypher sessions with rappers, DMX, Eve, Cassidy, and Murdah Mook. I also enjoyed the performances by Wiz Khalifa, Young Jeezy, 2 Chainz, T.I, Rick Ross, Meek Millz, Kirko Bangz, Kendrick Lamar, and Chris Lighty tribute, MGK, French Montana, Diddy and others.
Sidebar: Rick Ross performance is still in my head. I still didn’t get that whole robe thing midway through the performance but I guess that was his way of of letting folks know that he’s the boss.
