Former Dancing With The Stars/Actress, Julianne Hough rubbed many people the WRONG way when she decided to don a black face costume for Halloween over the weekend. The actress was paying homage to the character Uzo Aduba of her favorite tv show Orange Is The New Black and while she and her group friends were looking for a great night out, the night turned into a nightmare for Hough .
The minute Hough uploaded her costume pic on social media the harsh responses [which I will not post for obvious reasons] came pouring in. Julianna was called every name in the book. Some people did take to Hough’s defense, calling her rationale for the costume “blatantly foolish” and “young and clueless” .
Actress Martha Plimpton called Hough a “Moron” and later apologized. and another wrote:
“And the latest white celebrity to cluelessly bust out the black face is… Julianne Hough.”
Obviously Hough had some explaining to do because she was certainly not aware that this act of behavior is in poor taste and a disrespect to the black community.
Joan Duvall-Flynn of the NAACP Pennsylvania Media unit weighed in her two cents and told fox 411 the following:
” The current racial tensions in the United States require careful reflection as we relate to each other. If her behavior is a political statement, she should explain that,” she said. “If her behavior is an act of impulsive insensitivity, she needs, as a public figure, to be more responsible. And, an apology for such insensitivity is appropriate.”
Well, Hough issued an apology to the public shortly after and wrote:
” I am huge fan of the show ‘Orange Is The New Black’ actress Uzo Aduba and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in anyway. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize. “
When we know better, we do better. It’s clear that Julianne won’t make the same mistake twice.
