Winnie Madikizela Mandela was South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement heroine. The activist and former wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela (whom she stood by during his 27 years of imprisonment) was an ICON!
Mrs. Mandela was a freedom fighter, leader, and voice of the unheard cries -who sacrificed her life for the freedom of her country. Against all odds, with a bounty on her head, Mrs. Mandela was the public face defiantly keeping Nelson Mandela’s name, work, and legacy ALIVE while he was jailed.
“A social worker by profession, her marriage to freedom fighter Nelson Mandela saw her thrust into a world of political activism in which she was subjected to torture, harassment and banishment by the apartheid regime – Mail&Guardian .”
Nobel Peace Prize winner and archbishop Desmond Tutu grew up with Winnie in Johannesburg S.A and both served as activists. Winnie is the “defining symbol of the struggle against apartheid “. Her courageous defiance was deeply inspirational to me and the generations of activists -says Tutu.
Surrounded by her family and loved ones, Mrs. Mandela passed away early this morning (April 2nd). She is survived by two daughters she had with Nelson Mandela – Zenani and Zindzi. In the words of Tutu, “May She Rest In Peace and Rise In Glory “.
One Love PLUMS!
