Born, John Birks Gillespie, this jazz innovator later took the nickname ‘Dizzy’ . Gillespie is best known for his joyfully swollen cheek when payed and his signature angled trumpet bell.

In addition to creating the style of music known as bebop, Gillespie is considered one of the first musicians to mix Afro-Cuban, Caribbean and Brazilian rhythms with Jazz. Dizzy left a legacy of goodwill and good humour that has inspired jazz musicians and fans throughout the world.

Gillespie was and is an international treasure. Throughout his career he earned several distinguished awards from the music industry including the four Grammy awards for ‘The Lifetime Achievement Award’, ‘Best Improvised Jazz  Solo’,  Best Large Jazz Ensemble, and Porin Award For Best Foreign Jazz Album .

In 1990 Gillespie was given the Kennedy Centers Honors for his lifetime contribution to America Culture and that’s why we’ve chosen him for our [Day 7] #blackhistorysalute .
