Help Curly Girls Everywhere Take Pride In Their Hair
Earlier this year, Dove launched a self- esteem campaign initiative entitled ‘Love Your Curls’ which serves to empower ‘curly girls across the globe to love and embrace their natural curls. Their you tube video showcased young girls [of all shades] who felt that they’re natural curls /kinky hair was ‘not beautiful’; thus a longing desire for a straighter hair look.
Dove enlisted the children’s mothers to join the conversation and actively participate in building their child’s self-confidence. What was discovered [through self-reflection test] there were many mother’s who too had self-esteem issues that they’d wish to change about themselves; hence the newly launched curly hair emojis app.
Expanding the conversation, Dove has now twenty-seven curly hair designs and selectable skin tones and hair colors; some of which include animated GIF’s and over 12o emoji variations.
VP of Haircare at Unilever, Rob Candelino said:
” Dove Hair is committed to redefining traditional standards of beauty and ensuring women and girls see accurate reflections of themselves in the world around them, including and especially, in digital and social media – which is why we’re so excited to introduce the Dove Love Your Curls, in digital and social media – which is why we’re so excited to introduce the Dove Love Your Curls emojis. “
Of course, the campaign video came with a little backlash and social media debate from black and white curlista’s. The petty arguments centered mostly over the same ole’ ‘why are lighter complexioned girls featured most in the video? and the mere representation of the kinky hair girl ? , and blah, blah, blah. Once again, deflecting from the global issues at hand – BEAUTY STANDARDS!
I ‘d prefer to stick on the positives, thus , In closing I’d like recognize the author behind Dove’s inspiring and amazing ‘Love Your Curls’ book [out now] on Amazon, Kindle, & Apple ibooks is Yale and Oxford Graduate, Taiye Selasi.
