On Saturday afternoon [Dec. 20] two NYPD officers were shot dead in their marked police car in the Bed Stuyversant section of Brooklyn, New York. According to the news outlet the execution killing was committed by a 28 year-old male,9 Ismaaiyl Brinsley who reportedly sought to avenge the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Moments later, Brinsley turned the gun on himself at a nearby subway.
Officer Wenjian Liu, 32 was a newly wed of two months, and seven year veteran on the police force. Officer, Rafael Ramos, 40 was a husband, and father of two sons, was on the force for two years.
Disturbing details of the gunman have surfaced. Brinsley’s mother and sister has confirmed to news outlets that he suffered from severe mental illness, and was angered by the government’s unwillingness to help him. On Saturday morning [Dec. 20] Brinsley shot his girlfriend Shaneka Necole Thompson, 29 [who’s currently in critical condition] and fled to NYC via bus transport.
Prior to his encounter with the slained officers, Brinsley posted threatening tweets on social media.
NYC Mayor Bill Deblasio issued a statement yesterday [Dec. 22] calling for ‘CALM’ for a few days until the officers are laid to rest.
” I’m asking everyone and this is across the spectrum to put aside protests and demonstrations until these funerals are passed. Let’s focused on these families and what they’ve lost. “
Patrisse Cullors co-founder of the #blacklivesmatter movement spoke with MSNBC this morning and said the following:
” We think that people …, it their first amendment right to assemble peacefully and to protests, and we’re going to encourage folks in New York to do what they feel is necessary to continue to move towards victory. We’ve put out a statement and across the board, folks across the country in the #blacklivesmatter movement are grieving with the families who have been struck by this tragedy, not just the officers but the gunman’s girlfriend, Shaneka Thompson who is currently in critical condition. “
On Honoring Mayor Bill Debasio Requests:
” It’s a large movement. We have to respect people’s autonomy. Some people, the way that they’re grieving, and the way that their dealing with the loss of Eric Garner, and the non-indictment of Darren Wilson with Mike Brown, is being in the streets and peacefully protesting. And we want to honor everybody’s way that they mourn and we understand why the mayor is requesting it, and I think the people should have their own autonomy as to where they stand at this time.”
” This movement is led by many people; there’s no one leader, and what I prefer is people to organize and assemble peacefully and continue to move towards victory to end police brutality. The #blacklivesmatter movement is not calling out individual police officers but rather calling to change a system in which black people in particular are mostly impacted by law enforcement violence. “
” 2015 is the year of resistance, and the year of resilience, it’s about figuring out what legislation that we can pass both locally and nationally around ending law enforcement violence. “
The recent deaths of the NYPD officers has stirred heated tensions and divide [yet again] amongst the police and community residents, and the blame game has begun. NYPD officers sparked their own protests with #ICANBREATHE t-shirts; which some are calling a blatant mocking and attack against protestors of the #blacklivesmatter movement who’s first campaigned the popular phrase tag: ‘ICAN’TBREATHE’ .
NYC Police Commissioner, Bill Bratton, former NYC mayor Rudy Guiliani and others blame NYC Mayor Bill Deblasio for the officers deaths, while criticizing him for allowing protests which they are now referring to as ANTI-Police protest rallies.
How is the death of these slained officers, the fault of the protestors and Mayor Bill Deblasio?
The ‘blame’ card has been tossed [again], and the message is very clear, What Side Are You On?
Conservatives Gear Up For A Crack Down, Advice For The Movement
Our sincere condolences and prayers to families of the NYPD officers, as well as for Shaneka Thompson and her family.
