The annual tree lighting at New York’s Rockefeller center kicked off on Tuesday December 2nd , and thousands gathered to bear witness and to see ‘Mariah Carey’ who was performing at the holiday ceremony.
The event was overshadowed by imminent protests that flooded the manhattan streets following the non-indictment of the cop in the chokehold death of an unarmed staten island man, Eric Garner, and Carey’s not-so-good performance was also noted and sparked media attention.
Carey struggled with her entire performance; not hitting her notes, and having breathing difficulty. It was quite disappointing to watch. Carey was scheduled to perform as pre-tape performance instead but she reportedly showed up three hours late for her rehearsal and was ordered by NBC to perform live vocals instead. The outcome was bad for both parties.
Carey took to her fans on social media and apologized saying:
” Last night’s situation was beyond my control. I apologize to all that showed up, you know that I would never want to disappoint you.”
Carey was slammed from her poor performance and alleged tardiness, and some even blaming her recent break-up with soon to be ex-husbandm Nick Cannon as one reason. Carey allegedly was meeting with her divorce lawyers during the time of her scheduled rehearsal.
Another issue here is that prior to this performance, Carey received similar criticism from concert goers in from her recent world tour.
I’m still a fan, and I do think there’s more to the story here than what we’re hearing. Carey was under contractual obligations and she gets paid for her performances, so my only assumption here is that NBC had no plan b, and it was certainly too late to get a replacement simply because Carey was absent from rehearsal.
Carey certainly needs to do better, and redeem herself next time. If not, please don’t the stage.
