The 2014 Bet Hip Hop Awards premiered on television on Tuesday [Oct.14th] and there was much talk about some of the highlights of the annual event. I’ll spare you the full recap and provide with you a few of my favorite moments.

Standing in solidarity, Common moved the audience when he brought out the parents of #MichaelBrown on stage for a moment of UNITY alongside music producer Jay Electronica.

The foursome reminded the audience to to remain conscious and thoughtful of the current political atmosphere.

The rap cyphers are traditional at the Hip Hop Awards, and it includes rising and current artist a public platform to provide their lyric display in a group setting in a backstage room area, but this year Snoop Dog [who was the host of the event] added an never done before cypher to be presented on stage LIVE for the audience and rapper Murda Mook [@murdamookez] was the talk of the night.

No need to fear the name people, Murda Mook is a well known undefeated battle rapper who has built his street credibility from his infamous rap battles where he ‘lyrically’ murders his competitors.

Murda Mook reminded the audience that he doesn’t need  anyone’s approval to receive an industry ‘entry’ pass and he also took a slight jab at rapper, Drake which he noted himself the better than the top male emcee.

Remy Ma and her husband rapper Papoose issued a duo cypher performance promoting the importance of ‘black love’

I truly enjoyed the cypher feature with ‘Snow Tha Product’,  ‘Treach’, ‘David Banner’, ‘King Los’, and ‘Vic Mena’ .

Snow Tha Product is a breath of fresh air that deserves to be in this industry because she is gifted with the ‘BARS’.   Treach declared that Hip-Hop needs a ‘HIP’ replacement and David Banner called out black rappers for bragging about dope dealing and killing their own, and he also called out white rappers  asking  ‘Where were you when they gunned down Mike Brown?’

There were some decent performances this year. West Coast was definitely in this house. DJ Mustard was the winning producer this year and he was surely all over the beats most of the song performances.

Singer, Brandy reunited with Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Yoyo after 20 years and perform their classical hit “I Wanna Be Down” , and I enjoyed every part of their performance.
