New writer to ThatPLUM, Christina Jones got to sit down with Jay Sean for a full interview. Check it out below:
Q: Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the album name, “Neon”:
JS: Well the definition of Neon to me is the brightest light you can imagine, and I’m a very positive person and I love life. I love looking at the positive side of things and that’s why I’ve always aspired to be a positive individual and I think we’ve all witnessed dark times and we all need to see that light at some point. I wanted this album to make my fans smile and to take them across a journey, but more than anything to show that there’s a hope at the end of every tunnel.
Q: You’re known for being a rapper/singer/and songwriter. Will you be using all three of these talents on the new album?
JS: I’m not really spittin’ on this album. I used to, but I don’t want to confuse any people. I’ve written a lot of songs like “Passenger Side” for instance and that’s one of my favorite songs on the album and also something America hasn’t heard a side of me or my artistry before. It’s a really dope song.
Q: So you want your fans to distinguish you as a singer/songwriter?
JS: Well America only initially knew me as a pop artist for songs like “Down” and it’s because I’m a songwriter that it just so happens that my pop songs took off. It’s been 10 years, and I’m on my 4 and my heart is in stuff that’s soulful music. I’m not interested in corny pop music; I’m not interested in just having billboard chart music. So this album is for me just being real
Q: How does it feel that you’re the lead male vocalist on Cash Money Records?
JS: They are predominately a rap label, but I think they wanted to show themselves as more than just a hip hop label. They clearly showed the world that they’re the most successful hip-hop label, and now they’re showing the world that they are in fact a record label and cover all music genres. I feel blessed that I can represent them in that style.
Q: Are there any YMCMB artist features on the album?
JS: We have Busta Rhymes. I’ve wanted to work with him for years. It’s a dream to be able to work with him, so I’m really happy I’m able to do it.
Q: Outside of the new album, are there any new projects you’re working on?
JS: I have my own entertainment company called Camouflage Entertainment and for me it’s beyond music. I just signed a group called the Janoskians, and every 14 and 15-year-old girl knows about them. They’re like five little Justin Bieber’s except, they’re not a boy band. They’re a comedy act, or a group of boys who mock boy bands. We’ve had a super successful run so far, and they’ve sold out twice over so it’s been good so far.
Q: Can you please tell your fans at thatplum.com what your Twitter handle is?
JS: Twitter is @Jaysean. Instagram is @JaySheezy. Thank you to all my fans. Big up thatplum.com. Peace out.
