They often say that: “Art Imitates LIFE” Therefore, If Art imitates life, and fashion is a form of art, does fashion imitate life? Well, Aamna Aqeel says her “Be My Slave” editorial shoot which is currently featured in “DIVA” magazine was of no relation to historic reality of “Black slavery”. The Pakistani designer says her shoot was to bring awareness to child labor instead.
Sidebar: WOW Aamna, out of all the creative things you could’ve of came up with you picked an obvious pictorial reminder of “African American slave trade. That was GENIUS!
Clearly, Aamna rubbed MANY people the wrong way including Salima Feerasta of the The International Herald Tribune’s who lashed out at Aqeel calling the images of the shoot “vile images of racism and exploitation“ and called Aqueel’s explanation story “inexcusable.”
When Aqeel was asked about the the dark skinned boy [pictured above] she said: “He works in a garage and wanted some work.”
Oh When GREED strikes!
So PLUM’s I ask again, Does art imitate life? Clearly, these pics portray real-life realities and we all know that people [especially our young people] often live out what they see and hear in the media.
Aamna Aqeel – This editorial shoot is “highly offensive” not only to African Americans but to society as whole. Whether you believe it or not your perpetuating “Slavery” – and you know it.
SMH!
