We finally get to hear what actress, Zoe Saldana felt about the CONTROVERSY surrounding her lead role in the upcoming biopic film of Nina Simone. Zoe has been very tight lipped since the uproar began last year and while many people [including Nina Simone’s family] disapproved of Zoe [who is of Dominican/Puerto Rican decent] playing the role of the Jazz singer, [an African American known mostly for her great talent ability and standing in her natural African attributes; dark skin, nose with visible nostrils,] while not conforming, Zoe says she took on the role out of pure LOVE.
The director’s totally disregarded Nina Simone’s request [to cast a dark skin person w/similar resemblance of Simone] and went ahead to film the movie with an ACTRESS of their choice instead. Well, Hip Hollywood caught up with Zoe and asked her flat out about the controversy and here’s what she responded.
” What kept me from getting stressed and being hurt by the negative comments is that I’m doing it for my sisters and my brothers and I don’t care who tells me I’m not this or I’m not that. I know who I am and I know what Nina Simone means to me.”
“I did it all for love. Out of love for Nina, my people and who I am and my pride of being a Black woman and a Latina woman and an American woman. That’s my truth.”
