Coming off her successful solo EP “Armor On” Dawn Richards unveils her new album “Golden Heart” and graces the January issue of SFPL [Stuff Fly People Like] digital magazine cover. Dawn has journeyed along way since the days of ‘Danity Kane‘. In 2009 Dawn joined forces with Diddy and K.Diddybop to form the ‘Dirty Money‘ group but the group was short lived following their “Last Train To Paris“ album debut in 2010, and Dawn decided it was time to step out on her own as a solo artist. Last year, Dawn released her first EP “Armor On” on itunes and blew fans away with her lead singles “Bombs Away“, and “Automatic” and “Save Me From You“. Now she’ back with a new album and she dishes on her journey as a solo and independent artist, her musical inspiration, and more. Peep a few excerpts and photos from her interview below:
[nggallery id=69]On Her Musical Journey:
“My journey isn’t like everyone else’s. Mine isn’t that easy, but I’m not mad at it… It doesn’t make it any less dope.”
On Giving Advice:
“No one gave me advice. I had to figure all this out myself and I thought it was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me. I’m even more prepared now because of all the mess ups, all the bull, and all the wrong decisions that have brought me to this point.
On Obtaining A Distribution Deal While Staying Independent:
“We don’t have anything against major labels at all…We just chose to do what was best business wise for our company. A lot of times artists aren’t offered the distribution deal unless they already have an album and numbers are coming in and there’s a support system behind it. It just so happened that the movement is so massive that we were able to get an offer that it’s great to have a label look at us, but a distribution deal was even better because the revenue and everything that we do comes straight to us. It’s just when you get cards you’re dealt you just play with the cards you get. You don’t complain about what you don’t have, just play your hand. It just so happens we’ve been dealt a really good hand. It may not be a conventional hand, but we’re in a time where the idea of an artist and a label are changing.”
