Jill Scott Covers October Issue Of Essence Magazine

Singer, Jill Cover unveils her natural hair in the October issue of Essence magazine. The singer who is not only talentedly gifted vocally but in beauty as well, talks about life at 40yrs of age, finding her stride , and what’s next on the horizon reports Essence.  In the mag, Jill Scott also talks about one of  her new upcoming acting projects [which is slated to hit our tv screens soon] on Lifetime network “Steel Magnolias” which she stars in.

Now there’s been a bit of talk regarding Jill’s choice of hairdo on the October issue. Some people are saying that Jill rolled out her DIVA claws and demanded to be “all natural”,  meanwhile the ‘Golden’ singer has since denounce those rumors via twitter saying that there was no ‘stage coup’ on her part but rather Essence’s idea instead; in which she agreed with .  Here’s the tweets:

@NobleHonore @HuffingtonPost ok. U kinda got that right. I didn’t stage a coup. It was a coup for Essence to have natural hair on the cover.

She then tweeted later:

@NobleHonore @HuffingtonPost Essence Magazine and I completely worked together on this shoot. Yes it was important 4 me 2 b natural.

In the magazine, Jill Scott noted that she doesn’t have a hair preference and considers most of her hairstyles similar to a jewelry accessory.

This is the simplest form of myself. I look in the mirror and it’s like, ‘Hey, there you go. What’s up, girl?’ For me, hair is an accoutrement. Hair is jewelry. It’s an accessory. Tomorrow I may want a wig down to my butt and I’m gonna rock it, and the next day I may want a big Afro and I’m gonna rock that too…”—Jill Scott

Sidebar: I notice that anytime time a black woman wears her hair natural [especially if its a celebrity] it often becomes  a national discusssion. Why is that? I mean, were the only cultural group that gets the biggest criticism and STIGMA for wearing our hair in its natural state. It doesn’t even matter who called the decision for the cover image, our focus should be on the person, but unfortunately hollywood land will forever carve its history on image first and black hair is not an  acceptable norm in hollywood yet.  SMH!

Jill Scott looks absolutely stunning on the cover and I can’t wait to read what’s on the horizon for her next.  The magazine hit stands September 15th.
