Lil Wayne’s artist YMCB rapper, Cory Gunz, was arrested yesterday in the bronx on alleged gun charges. The rapper was reportedly carrying a loaded firearm yesterday Jan. 28 in the afternoon hours of the day when police made the arrest. Gunz father, Peter Gunz spoke to MTV this morning to speak of his son’s arrest in which he called was an “illegal search” that is currently being investigated but says that he cannot elaborate fully on the details of the arrest.
I spoke to the arresting officer, and so far, what I’m hearing from him is that they got a phone call at the station saying they should ‘look out’. “According to the officer, they didn’t know he was Cory Gunz. They just saw a bunch of kids following him around. What I will say is that the officer that arrested Cory, actually happened to be a cool dude. After arresting Cory, sitting down with him and talking, he felt bad about the situation.
Cory is currently being held at Central booking on E. 161st Street in the bronx. This is Cory’s first offense, however gun charge is an automatic jail sentence in New York State. Five-O don’t play when it comes to charges such as these regardless if your a rapper or not, ie: Lil Wayne. It’s Real!
This one of those news that no parent wants to hear especially when your child has so much good things going for them. Cory was signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label last year and was expected to release his album later this year. One can only hope that is one big misunderstanding and if not, Cory won’t be made an example of and given a second a chance instead.
LISTEN FOLKS: I understand rappers feel obligated to rep their hood and hang out in their old neighborhood after they’ve accumulated success but that is never the best option. Your TOO EXPOSED and your an EASY TARGET and not everyone is happy about your success even if they pretend to be.
Everyone knows who you are and the assumption is that you have money period. I love my hood folks and I love hanging out in the hood at times but the truth of the matter is that some hood folks don’t understand the politics of success nor the politics of the music industry. They see a guy like Cory Gunz who’s sign to one of the biggest labels, and his friend/mentor and boss is Lil Wayne who’s STUPID Rich and its already embedded in their minds that HE HAS MONEY, so of course he’s going to be under the microscope when he’s in the hood and to protect himself he may need to carry firearm as a cautionary. Why? Because police is never on time when you need them in the hood.
MY ADVICE: If you really love your hood, build a school, establish park/playground, by partnering with a non-profit organization or the local church and give back to your neighborhood that way. If you have family/friends still residing there and you must be present for a function, walk with a body guard who can protect you and who’s license to fire a firearm when necessary. Let’s beat the system instead of constantly getting caught up in the system’s trap.
Update: Since the posting of this article P.L.U.M has learned that Cory was released on Mon. Jan 29 after posting 30,000 bail.
