Troy Davis: Laid To Rest

Over 1,000 supporters gathered at Jonesville Baptiste Church on Saturday to celebrate the life of Troy Davis. Family, friends, and supporters of Davis chanted “I am Troy Davis” throughout the ceremony as Davis was laid to rest. Davis 42, died by legal injection at the Jackson Correctional Institute in Jackson Georgia on September 21st.

Troy Davis was convicted of murdering Mark MacPail, an off-duty police officer in 1989. Davis affirmed his innocence throughout his twenty-year sentence and once more just minutes before his execution. Despite numerous appeals and public protests elected officials, the Supreme Court denied Troy Davis appeal for a new trial. The facts of the case drew public concern after 7 out of 9 key witnesses recanted their testimony; claiming “they were pressured by authorities to implicate Troy Davis as the murder,”,and the murder weapon of the alleged crime is still un-founded.

As a people we really need to review our legal system. Our justice system tell us that “A person is “Innocent until proven guilty” but yet the contrary is often demonstrated. The death of Troy Davis makes me feel that I too am Troy Davis.
