On an recent interview with The Mirror ,Latavia talked openly about her split from Destiny Childs and then manager Mathew Knowles. Excerpts Below:
Latavia on Mathew Knowles:
“He acted like an army drill sergeant, making us sing as we jogged in the park and rehearse dance routines in the family room for hours on end…..We even had joint prayer sessions asking God to help us get a record deal…….It was like the famously regimented childhood of the Jackson Five……We used to call him Joe Jackson……..but it not like he beat us with his belt or anything.”
Latavia on other members of the group:
“Letoya was the jokester, Kelly was the sensitive one, the first to cry when we’d be watching movies….. Beyonce was the mamma and I was sassy one.”
Latavia on the split of Destiny’s Child:
“Things seemed unfair.Beyonce and Kelly had cars….I’m not saying pay checks were different but Mathew used to say a lot of crazy things like “Y’all should be glad I’m giving you money”. Letoya and I began to have some concerns….and we were happy for Mathew to stay as our manager but we wanted another manager to work alongside him. We wrote a letter to Mathew expressing our concerns and the next thing we knew….we were out. We didn’t find out until we saw the video for Say My Name which now had two new girls in our replacement.”
Latavia on regrets and relationship with Beyonce and Kelly now:
“My one regret is that I should have to Beyonce and Kelly before I sent the letter……That is the one thing I would have done differently……I would have gone to my sisters and discussed it with them. After that, we didn’t speak for many years. I saw Beyonce in 2003 and we jut hugged and talked…it was emotional. I spoke to Kelly last year and I asked her, ‘Do you undertsand why we did what we did? She said ‘Oh gosh yes… and that was enough for me.”
Latavia says that that she is convinced “that if were not for Mathew Knowles Destiny Child would still be together as a band.” Latavia, is looking to launch a lingerie business very soon.
