Stephen Burrows was one of the first African American designers to gain world-wide acclaim as a fashion designer. Burrows, fashion career began in the early 1970’s. Known for his silky flowing chiffons and creative use of color blocking, and “lettuce edge” Burrows, took the fashion industry by storm.
Stephen Burrows attended Fashion Institute of Technology. In 1968 he opened up his very own boutique called the “O Boutique” in New York City”. The “O Boutique” was an instant success and, Burrows fashion clothes became a “must have. ” In 1970, Burrows teamed up with the Henri Bendel store; a prestigious clothing store on Fifth Avenue; where he established his very own boutique called “Stephen Burrow’s World”.
Stephen Burrows attracted many A-list celebs including Diana Ross, Beryl Johnson, Farah Fawcett, Vanessa Williams, Oprah and First Lady, Michelle Obama.
Burrows took a twenty year hiatus, but he made one of the biggest comebacks in fashion history in 2002. Since then, Stephen Burrows has revamped the Henri Bendel Boutique, and launched his own collection at Target Stores. Stephen Burrows is back and at top of his game.
